BU News

Posted in College Life on February 26th, 2007 by Mike Nguyen – Be the first to comment

I’ve recently had a bit of blogger’s block lately. Nothing is really popping out to me to write about on the internet. So, I’m taking a small departure from my usual internet finds to post about life at BU so far.

Saturday morning, I wake up to my alarm at 5:15AM. I don’t usually get up that early, especially after partying the night before, but I was taking a 7AM bus back home to visit the family. No more than a few minutes later, fire trucks start descending on Beacon St. I mean, that’s usually nothing out of the ordinary, but what I thought was a small false alarm and one truck full of firefighters probably hating life to be awake so early turned out to be about a dozen or so trucks. I took a picture on my way out of the apartment to the T stop.

There wasn’t an ounce of smoke or burning blaze I could detect that morning, but it ended up being quite a fire that ended up killing two BU students. . My prayers go out to them. It’s been a tragic school year here at BU, with this incident making four deaths total, three of which happening practically next door to me. No one, young or old, should take their life for granted. I hope this is the last tragedy for a long while here on campus.

On a happier note, a movie is filming here on BU’s campus. There are trailers and wires all up in the campus, I don’t think many students have that much of a clue either. To my knowledge, our Freep hasn’t really picked up on it, although they’re always slow to the news tap. The movie, titled “21″, is actually going to be based off the book Bringing the House Down. Honestly, it was matter of time before that book got turned into a movie, am I right? Here’s the IMDB info on the movie.

Apparently it stars Kevin Spacey, Kate Bosworth, and Laurence Fishbourne. Big deal, huh? Maybe these are their trailers below?

I think this is the eating/backstage/food area.

Honestly, I don’t think this is that safe.

Things That Make Me Happy…

Posted in Personal Stuff on February 26th, 2007 by Mike Nguyen – Be the first to comment

In my earlier years, I aspired to be Michael Jordan, a gifted athlete, a role model, and he got to hang out with freakin’ Looney Tunes characters! What’s not to look up to? That guy was the man.

Then I realized I couldn’t play basketball, or much of any sport. It didn’t help I never really grew much in height.

I feel like lately, although my interest in basketball has all but died, I find myself envious of Shaq on more than one occassion. It started with Cribs, it continues with this video below:

You da’ man Shaq.

Project 365 – The Day My Camera Died

Posted in Personal Stuff on February 16th, 2007 by Mike Nguyen – Be the first to comment

When I finally feel like I know all the quirks and features of my Canon SD550 digital camera, I go and drop the thing and break the LCD screen, rendering it useless.

My luck with electronics even amazes me. If my gadgets don’t get lost or stolen, they get dropped on a crowded dancefloor while I’m drunk. I guess it was poor judgement to want to take a “Look How Hot We Are While Dancing” picture. In hindsight, that shot wasn’t as necessary as it seemed.

Anywho, my resolve to continue Project 365 still hasn’t shattered, just my camera. I’ll find another camera, and while I’m in transition, my Canon works fine to my knowledge. I’ll just have to keep it on Auto and use the mini viewfinder.

Man, I’m blowing money on electronics this month. This will not end well financially.

That about explains it. Found the video on lifehacker, although it originally comes from ZeFrank show.

I only care about the Superbowl commercials…

Posted in Television on February 8th, 2007 by Mike Nguyen – Be the first to comment

So the Super Bowl was last weekend, and only today have I gotten around to writing my thoughts.

Well, I’m happy the Colts won if the Pats couldn’t. Peyton Manning deserves to win just on the quality/quantity of commercials he’s been in. Although, the irony of him losing would have been fun too.

That rain was out of control, huh? Who thought Prince was going to get electrocuted live in front of millions? I guess I shouldn’t doubt the Artist and his powers. I might have fangirl’ed when he performed Purple Rain, but I’ll leave it at that.

Oh, and the commercials. I most definitely fangirl’ed when upon seeing…

OMFG!

… Kevin Rose and Alex Albrecht of the Diggnation podcast randomly appear in a GoDaddy ad!!

Actually, in real time, you only really see Kevin. Alex is kind of hidden between all the girls. And I shouldn’t have been that surprised since GoDaddy is a major sponsor of Diggnation. And for those of you not geeky enough to know what Diggnation is, it’s two guys drinking beer and conversing about the top (mostly) tech stories on Digg.com. They are funny as hell, and I secretly aspire to be like them, as most Digg fans probably are too.

Enough of the geeky stuff, coming in a very close second is the commercial that caused the most noise in my apartment…

GM Robot Superbowl Commercial

the GM Robot commercial. Man, who knew an apartment of guys, including me, could build up such emotional attachment to a robot in a matter of 30 seconds. And the smart use of “All by Myself” only made us scream in horror when the robot jumped off the bridge. Man, episodes of 24 and Lost take a whole hour to build up such viewer anxiety in me, and this commercial managed to get the same amount of pure shock in 1/60th of the time.

Of course, animals, animals, and pehoehoe will always be keepers in my book.

Glad to see the Blockbuster animals back.

Ricardo Montabon?

I can’t find the Comcast Slowsky Turtles Superbowl ad anywhere online. This oldie will do for now.

Random Thoughts

Just writing down a few thoughts since I haven’t posted in a while.

I’ll update to WordPress 2.1 eventually.

Project 365 is almost one month in. Who would’ve thought that I would carry on this far? And, to add to that, take some pretty decent pictures. One month in, and I still haven’t learned all the features of my Canon. It’s crazy. This isn’t even counting the entire year I’ve had it before Project 365.

I installed Windows Vista Business the other day. My ATI USB TV tuner no longer works, which is kind of sad. I was looking forward to taping American Idol episodes. My 80GB external hard drive with my backups and pictures and movies and tv episodes just died on me yesterday. Guess I’ll have to redownload my Dilbert episodes. Luckily, nothing too important in there. I don’t think it died from Vista, but more so because it was a Western Digital hard drive with a life expectancy of less than year. It was an AMAZING hard drive up until it died…

There’s a few other kinks I’m learning to get through. Still fairly impressed that my laptop can handle Vista as well as it could considering all the hype. I’m still trying to convince myself to get a new computer anyways. Otherwise, I love FlipScreen 3d or whatever it’s called in Vista. I don’t know why I take such enjoyment out of it.

I could flip for hours…
