I happened upon this link from Gadling and was inspired and touched by the message. Film director Mark Johnson recorded about 100 musicians from around the world as they performed “Stand by Me,” which resulted in an amazing and moving arrangement. There is a foundation behind this project, Playing For Change, that seeks to promote and connect music around the world by providing local musicians with the resources to do what they do best. They’ve built schools and music facilities in South Africa and Nepal and created a documentary making the film festival circuit right now.

Definitely the type of charity and group that I love supporting.

My ears have always had a thing for exotic instruments and sounds. One of the people that I always thought had the coolest job is Russ Landau, composer for Survivor and many other of Mark Burnett’s reality shows. I think the Survivor theme song is one of the best television themes ever. It is so fitting to the spirit of the show, and each season, Russ travels with the Survivor crew to these remote locations and interacts with the locals to gather new sounds and instrumentation of the local culture. He mixes those sounds with the same basic theme melody (an ancient Russian chant, I believe) to capture the location into the song. To confess, I look forward to the new theme song every season as much if not moreso than the rest of the premiere. Every Thursday, that song gets me pumped. Here’s the latest season’s theme (Gabon, Africa).

So the Super Bowl was last weekend, and only today have I gotten around to writing my thoughts.

Well, I’m happy the Colts won if the Pats couldn’t. Peyton Manning deserves to win just on the quality/quantity of commercials he’s been in. Although, the irony of him losing would have been fun too.

That rain was out of control, huh? Who thought Prince was going to get electrocuted live in front of millions? I guess I shouldn’t doubt the Artist and his powers. I might have fangirl’ed when he performed Purple Rain, but I’ll leave it at that.

Oh, and the commercials. I most definitely fangirl’ed when upon seeing…

… Kevin Rose and Alex Albrecht of the Diggnation podcast randomly appear in a GoDaddy ad!!

Actually, in real time, you only really see Kevin. Alex is kind of hidden between all the girls. And I shouldn’t have been that surprised since GoDaddy is a major sponsor of Diggnation. And for those of you not geeky enough to know what Diggnation is, it’s two guys drinking beer and conversing about the top (mostly) tech stories on Digg.com. They are funny as hell, and I secretly aspire to be like them, as most Digg fans probably are too.

Enough of the geeky stuff, coming in a very close second is the commercial that caused the most noise in my apartment…

<img src="http://www.mknonline.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2007/02/gmrobot.jpg" alt="GM Robot Superbowl Commercial" \>

the GM Robot commercial. Man, who knew an apartment of guys, including me, could build up such emotional attachment to a robot in a matter of 30 seconds. And the smart use of “All by Myself” only made us scream in horror when the robot jumped off the bridge. Man, episodes of 24 and Lost take a whole hour to build up such viewer anxiety in me, and this commercial managed to get the same amount of pure shock in 1/60th of the time.

Of course, animals, animals, and pehoehoe will always be keepers in my book.

Glad to see the Blockbuster animals back.

Ricardo Montabon?

I can’t find the Comcast Slowsky Turtles Superbowl ad anywhere online. This oldie will do for now.

I hope I spelled that right. Speaking of which, how awesome was the ABC televised Spelling Bee? I mean, it was good on ESPN, but man, on high def ABC, the drama was palpable. That poor girl that came in third, getting eliminated, then brought back in, and then losing again. And the cruelty of not having extra seats for eliminated finalists and then sticking a camera and a microphone in their face as they lose. Man, just great tv. Between the annoying home school kid and the annoying Middle Eastern kid(s), I’m glad the girls won out. Although, I thought the Canadian girl would be much more marketable as a champion.

I have to come clean with people. I’m a HUGE fan of Stargate: SG1, the series on SCI-FI and am uber-excited for Friday night television, when new seasons of both Stargates (SG-1 and Atlantis) and Battlestar Galactica premiere tomorrow night.

As if that wasn’t bad enough, thanks to marathons of all three shows this week on SCI-FI, I’ve become obsessed with Stargate: Atlantis and Battlestar Galactica too. So it’s official, I have a SCI-FI problem.

I’m still not ready to admit I’ve been watching Starting Over daily over break and cannot wait for Dancing with the Stars tonight. Slow steps.

To save my machismo, how about them Longhorns! Vince Young is da’ man.
